Optional: Thursday, August 21 Craft Night Potluck Meet & Greet with Wesley at 6pm BYOB
Spend a three-day weekend with Wesley Hathaway learning the basics of relief carving through the creation of either a bread bowl or a bread board from basswood. Relief carving can be described by cutting a pattern or design into a flat surface revealing a raised image using depth and shadow. This class will be an introduction providing foundational skills into the vast art of relief carving in wood. Students will learn how to use various tools such as the gouge, skew chisel, and V tool.
Projects
Students will have the opportunity to carve either a bread bowl or breadboard, a useful and functional object. These pieces are inspired by Norwegian design like acanthus and stave churches. Over time the piece will change with touch, exposure and use creating a patina reflecting its surroundings.
Any experience level is welcome but keep in mind, wood relief carving can be quite physical. Having the stamina to use your hands and arms for multiple days is an important consideration.
All tools and wood will be provided.
Optional Recommended Tools
Any wood carving gouges you may have, carving mallet, bench knife (craft knife) and wood clamps/pressure clamps. If you do intend on bringing your own carving gouges please sharpen/mend them before the class to the best of your ability.
Workshop Fee: $285.
Materials fee: $60 to be paid directly to the instructor during class.
Wesley Hathaway grew up in Indiana where being creative was always encouraged, whether it was playing an instrument, drawing, or just cutting up popsicle sticks. Wesley spent 6 years in the Air Force which is how he stumbled upon a folk school in Fairbanks, Alaska and got exposed to craft. Wesley now teaches at various folk schools like Vesterheim and North House Folk School. He is now a full time woodcarver.
